New Faculty Photos

The Department of Chemistry is proud to welcome our two newest faculty members!

With Dr. Marta Wloch, the department continues to expand its computational/theoretical chemistry capabilities. Dr. Wloch comes to us from Michigan State University, where she has been conducting research as a Research Assistant Professor. She received her doctorate from the Department of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Silesia in Poland.

Dr. Wloch is developing new computational methods in quantum chemistry with a focus on approaches based on the coupled-cluster theory, and the application of these methods to problems in organic and bioinorganic chemistry. She is currently recruiting graduate and undergraduate students with a strong physical chemistry background and excellent mathematical skills to join her group. If you are interested in becoming a part of this dynamic research team, please contact Professor Wloch at wloch@mtu.edu.

Dr. Lanrong Bi brings her interest in medicinal chemistry to our organic chemistry division. She comes to us from her most recent position as an Associate Research Scientist at the Columbia Genome Center at Columbia University in New York, where she has been conducting research in DNA sequencing using molecular engineering approaches.

Dr. Bi's research areas include the development of novel molecular probes for DNA sequencing analysis and disease gene discovery, new imaging and therapeutic agents towards cancer and cardiovascular disease, and the design and synthesis of novel prodrugs of peptides and peptide mimetics with enhanced bioavailability and selectivity. Dr. Bi's group has openings for graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in medicinal chemistry and skills in organic synthesis. If you would like to be a part of this exciting research team, please contact Dr. Bi at lanrong@mtu.edu.

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Tech!

Our undergraduate offerings now include degrees in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Cheminformatics, in addition to the basic Chemistry degree. We have a dynamic group of students in our department, many of whom participate in undergraduate research in biochemistry, organic chemistry, computational chemistry, among other topics. We're always looking for future chemists, could you be one? Drop us a line, schedule a visit, or apply to MTU.

The department faculty lead externally funded research groups with about 30 PhD students actively engaged in these projects. There are always several research groups with openings for new graduate students. Apply directly to the MTU Graduate School.

Our new Peace Corps Masters International program offers a degree in Applied Science Education in conjunction with Peace Corps service.

We want to hear from our alumni! Let us know what you're up to, send us a note, come for a visit, or catch up with us at a conference. Link to your colleagues through Alumni Relations.

I invite you to contact me with any questions or feedback.
