Chemistry Faculty and Students:
Printing Quotas:
Due to limited funds and limited space on the servers, each user account has a print quota for each semester and a limit on how much hard drive space it can have. When your printing units in the lab nears the semesterly quota, an email will be sent to you. Once you surpass the quota, printing privileges will be lost. In order to purchase more printing units you will have to fill out a deposit form with amount, depositor and signature. Then bring the form and the money to the cashiers office. Bring your receipt to Shane and he will reactivate your printing privileges.
The print quotas are:
- Undergraduate: $7.50 / semester.
- Graduate: $10.00 / semester.

Disk Usage:
The Chemistry department has what is called a RAID Array for storage of
computer files. This device is a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives
configured in such a way so that if one of the hard disk drives fails
there will be no interruption what so ever. The system can continue
to provide file storage services even while a failed drive is replaced.
The entire array is backed up nightly onto Mammoth Exabyte 2 tapes
using the modified Tower of Hanoi algorithm. If something catastrophic
should happen to our array we can restore files from tape backup.
If something catastrophic should happen to the server room where
everything, including the backup tapes, are destroyed we can restore
from monthly backups which are not kept in the Chem Sci building.
The disk space in our array is finite and since it is shared by everyone there
is a need to limit space per user. We have a system installed that nightly
checks to see if people are within the limits. Should you go over the
limit you will be sent email notifying you. You will be given at least 5
business days (M-F) to take care of your files. If you are still over the limit after
the alotted days then your account will be deactivated until we can work
something out. Note: your files are not deleted, you simply won't be
able to log in. Accounts will not be deactivated on weekends. See the Systems Administrator if you need help in reducing your
disk space usage.
Steps for Reducing Disk Usage
Sometimes people don't even realize they are using an exorbitant amount of
disk space. That is why running 'top10' will help you see where you need
to focus your attention on. Often an application a user regularly uses
saves temporary files or log files somewhere within the user's home drive.
These files eventually push a user over his/her disk usage limit.
Guidelines:
1) Delete what you don't need.
2) Compress what you want to keep but may not use for months or years to come.
3) Move to other media, such as CDROMs, those files you may never need while at the
university but simply don't want to delete.
Compression Utilities
Unix: gzip
PC: zip
Check your quotas (chemistry students, faculty, and staff only):
You can check how much of your print quota and disk space are remaining by typing in your MTU userid and pressing send. You will receive an email from us with the information.
If you have any questions about the department's computing policies, contact the systems administrator.
