Chemistry Server Remote Login
The Chemistry Computer Servers are set up so that all chemistry students, faculty, and staff can login to the servers from outside the department. There are three main ways to login.
- UNIX Shell/Console
A UNIX console allows you to view, access, and modify files, as well as access certain programs. SSH is the only type of UNIX console currently allowed.
- ssh (secure/encrypted shell):
ssh is not presently a default Windows program. ssh requires third-party software like SSH, so specific login instructions vary by the program used.
NOTE: ssh is a secure/encrypted information transfer.
- After logging in, you can logout by typing logout.
- If you are unfamiliar with UNIX commands, a good tutorial can be found here.
- Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
SFTP allows you to transfer files between two machines like the chemistry server and your local machine. There are three ways to use SFTP:
- Command Line
From a command line prompt in UNIX, type sftp userid@login.chemistry.mtu.edu, where your userid is your MTU ISO username, and press Enter. You will need to enter your MTU ISO password. Once logged in, you can transfer files between computers. To logout, type bye.
- Third-Party Software
Many third-party programs exist that provide a graphical user interface to aid in SFTP. One such program is SSH. Ways to login and perform file transfers vary by the program used.
- Windows Terminal Server
Windows Terminal Server allows you to access the Windows desktop you would see if you were actually sitting at a chemistry computer. Accessing the terminal server requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Software, which can be downloaded here. Please follow the Install Instructions when installing this software. Once installed, run the program and follow these instructions:
- Click the "Options >>" button.
- Put wyndoes.chemistry.mtu.edu as the Computer on the General tab.
- Leave the username and password blank. The terminal server will prompt you for this information once you are connected to it.
- Put CHEMISTRY as the domain on the General tab.
- Set the Remote Desktop Size (on the Display tab) to either 800x600 or 1024x768. The "Full Screen" option makes it difficult to access your computer while logged in.
- Select other options as desired.
- Click ok.
- Enter your Chemistry userid and password when prompted.
The terminal server has access to many chemistry programs as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Contact Chemistry Computing Support if you have any questions or problems using any of these remote login methods.
